For our March Food with Friends session, we enjoyed a very special visit to the Historic Dockyard for our belated International Women’s Day celebration. It was a day filled with creativity, learning, and connection.

We were warmly welcomed by Jo Valentine, Community Producer at the National Museum of the Royal Navy, who gave us an inspiring tour of the gallery. We explored a beautiful collection of portraits that celebrate women in the Royal Navy. Each portrait told a story and highlighted the strength, courage, and contributions of women throughout British naval history.

Taking inspiration from the miniature portraits in the museum’s collection, we created our own artwork. Each woman chose someone important in her life to celebrate. We learned how symbols have been used in the Navy, such as Morse code, flags, and tattoos, to share messages. Many of us also explored birth flowers and the “secret language of flowers,” using them in our paintings to represent personal meaning and emotion.

After the tour, the group spent time looking closely at the artwork in the gallery, noticing the use of symbolism and storytelling. This inspired everyone to create their own mini canvas painting. Some chose to paint inspirational women from their lives, while others explored creative ideas using symbols and colour. It was a calm, enjoyable space where everyone could express themselves freely and learn new skills.

We were also joined by female officers from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary. It was wonderful to see women in uniform in such a friendly and relaxed setting. They took time to talk, listen, and connect with the group, helping to build trust and understanding.

For many vulnerable women, meeting female officers in a safe and welcoming environment can make a big difference. It helps break down fear and builds confidence. Seeing approachable, supportive women in these roles can change perceptions and make it easier to reach out for help when needed.

Community events like Food with Friends are vital, especially for vulnerable women. They offer a safe space to connect, build confidence, reduce isolation, and feel a sense of belonging. Meeting positive role models can have a lasting impact on wellbeing and self-esteem.

Overall, the day was inspiring, creative, and uplifting. It reminded us of the importance of celebrating women, sharing stories, and supporting each other in a strong and caring community.
