Last week, we had the honour of speaking at the book introduction seminar for Refugees and Asylum Seekers in East Asia: Perspectives from Japan and Taiwan. The event was facilitated by the book’s editors, Lara Momesso, Senior Lecturer and Co-Director of the Research Centre for Migration, Diaspora and Exile at the University of Central Lancashire, and Polina Ivanova, Senior Researcher at the Asia-Japan Research Institute of Ritsumeikan University.

This book brings together 20 authors across 15 chapters, exploring the legal frameworks, public discourse, and lived experiences of migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers in Japan and Taiwan. We were pleased to join fellow contributors at the seminar: Lisa Unangst from Empire State University, Mariko Hayashi from Southeast and East Asian Centre, Christine Lin from Center for Gender and Refugee Studies, UC Law San Francisco, and Sohrab Ahmadian from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies.

Our contribution, featured in the opening chapter, Refugee Protection in Japan and Taiwan: Common Challenges and Ways Forward for Human Security, highlights shared obstacles in both countries and proposes practical solutions for strengthening refugee protection.

This book was inspired by a conversation between Lara and Polina and grew out of the 2022 Roundtable on Refugees in Japan and Taiwan, which led to a policy publication. Now available open-access on Springer Nature: https://lnkd.in/e-QKq8tJ
