For our May Food With Friends gathering, we were delighted to welcome Macmillan Lead Cancer Nurse, Edit Galambos, from Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, who delivered an engaging and informative session on skin cancer awareness.
With the glorious summer sunshine streaming through the beautiful glass walls of the Green House at Victoria Park, it could not have been a more fitting topic for the day.

Edit shared important information about skin cancer, including why it is so important to protect our skin during the summer months, how exposure to UV rays can affect us even in the UK, and the simple steps we can all take to check our skin regularly for any changes.
Many of the participants, who were migrants from countries with much hotter climates, were surprised to learn that even the UK’s few precious sunny days can still pose risks to our skin. The session sparked thoughtful conversations and encouraged everyone to think more carefully about sun safety and self-care.
After the talk, participants enjoyed a delicious spread of homemade dishes and sweet treats, sharing food, stories, laughter, and friendship around the table, which is exactly what Food With Friends is all about.

We are so grateful to Edit and Portsmouth Hospitals for taking the time to support our community with such valuable health information in a warm and accessible way.
A big thank you also goes to the National Lottery Community Fund for supporting Food With Friends. Your support helps us continue creating welcoming spaces where people can connect, learn, and build friendships.
We’re already looking forward to our next gathering in October!
